According to reports from 48 Minutes Of Hell and NBA Fan house, the Spurs intends to sign Keith Bogans to a one-year, $1.03 million guaranteed deal. Last season he averaged 5.6 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist for the Bucks.
Update! Jeff McDonald of the Express-News confirmed that Keith Bogans has agreed to a one-year deal but it is not immediately clear whether Bogans’ contract is fully guaranteed or if it is a make-good deal for camp.
Bogans is expected to formally sign the contract later this week. Manu Ginobili posted this message to Bogans: "Welcome to the family, man!"
The 6'5" swingman is said to be a poor man's version of Bruce Bowen if that holds to be true; the Spurs made another steal out of this signing. His arrival will give added depth to the Spurs' Shooting Guard and Small Forward positions; he is also a descent ball handler.
If he is signed, he has to earn a roster spot through the Spurs training camp, which could definitely be highly competitive with players like Hairston, Williams, Mahinmi, Jerrells, Gist and McClinton fighting for the final two spots.
Will he ever break to the Spurs rotation? Maybe, specially if we put into consideration that Coach Pop tends to favor more experienced (veteran) players. Bogans has also proven that he can provide quality backup minutes and the idea of him as Bowen replacement (to a lesser extent) is still intriguing.
Personally, I think this signing hurts Hairston's chances quite a bit although he has shown tremendous improvement during Summer League. Still, the Spurs have training camp to decide... For now; Bogans is a nice pick up, an insurance policy if some players in the camp don't "show up" as expected. And again, this only shows how dedicated the Spurs is when it comes to winning....
